Personality answers:
What is justice to your character? How important is it to them?
Maria is a French revolutionary with a strong sense of morality. To her, justice is challenging the so-called natural order — a world where people are born into their social classes and are forced to live in a monarchy. She strongly believes that there should be no more kings and aristocrats because they abuse their prestige. Justice is extremely important to Maria. Her mother was constantly harassed by tax collectors which made it difficult for them to earn their keep. She cares about people who’ve been wronged by the system. Maria secretly put together a rebellion group to oppose corruption within the government itself. She’s inspired by Annette’s stories of rebellion from Saint-Domingue and wants to embody the revolutionist spirit.
While she may have good intentions, Maria lacks experience and may come off as naive or idealistic. However, she does what she can to uphold justice and it’s one of her core values.
What would your character say is their best trait? What is truly their best trait?
Maria would say that her best trait is her dedication to the revolutionary movement. She believes that true change can only come through action. Her passion for revolution comes from the rebellions in France. The government in Paris has overthrown the monarchy and declared itself a republic. These events inspire Maria to lead her own revolutionist group. She also heard about the revolutionist outbreak over in the Caribbean, where the enslaved people fought back and killed their oppressors. Maria’s worldview is heavily influenced by political issues within the government and the church.
Her actual best trait would be her compassion. She is empathetic towards commoners and the lower class. Maria cares deeply for strangers she’s never met. She takes the time to listen to people's concerns and fears. Richter once said that Maria and her mother are some of the kindest people he’s ever known. Maria tries to be a forgiving person. She wanted to persuade Abbot Emmanuel to do the right thing before he ultimately betrayed her.
Explain which event in canon is most pivotal to your character's development, and who they are today.
The event that is most pivotal to Maria’s character development is the Abbot Emmanuel’s betrayal. For the longest time, Maria always assumed that her father was dead. When she learned that he was alive, she wanted to give him a chance. Maria put aside her grievances about the situation and attempted to speak with him on even terms. She really wanted a family. She put herself at risk for a chance to have a proper father. Abbot Emmanuel didn’t reciprocate Maria’s kindness. He chose to sacrifice her to Erzebeth Bathory and the forces of evil. Ever since that moment, Maria felt that she could no longer trust the people around her. She pushed them away and she became more alone. Maria lost her innocence and naivety because of these events. In truth, all she wanted to do was to stop her father before it was too late.
What is your character most afraid of?
One of Maria’s fears is that she might be like her father. She’s a witch with the ability to summon beasts from another realm called the “otherworld”. It’s no different from her father who is a Forgemaster (an individual that creates monsters from human corpses). In her pursuit of justice, she considers herself righteous the same way her father did. The church created an allegiance with the “Vampire Messiah,” an act Maria viewed as pure evil. Evil has to be fought and destroyed simply because it is evil. What sets her apart from her father’s preaching about holy judgement and righteousness of God? Both of them believe they’re doing what they think is morally correct. Who’s to say that she’s not crossing boundaries by joining the war with the revolution? Are her actions nothing more than mere hypocrisy? Maria is at odds with herself. The thought that her idealisms may be like the corruption she despises haunts her. Maria’s afraid her actions may lead her down the same path her father walked.
Inventory:
A ribbon
Ornate hair brush
A small decorative mirror
Medicinal herb
Powers/Abilities:
Magic
Maria is an exceptionally powerful witch. She has the ability to summon animal familiars from the Otherworld. Maria calls for creatures by drawing a circle in the air with her finger. Once they’re summoned, they obey her commands. Additionally, Maria can summon more than one familiar at a time. If Maria’s resolve should falter, the magic familiars will return to the Otherworld. Controlling her summons takes a great deal of concentration. Maria may face some difficulty controlling the animals if she’s afraid of them. She shows a deep connection to these creatures and claims they’re a part of her. Maria even mourns them when they die.
Vermillion Bird
The Vermillion Bird is a familiar that Maria uses for long ranged combat. She can shoot them like projectiles flying in the air. Maria controls them with movements from her hands and fingers. Outside of battle, Maria can use them to fly across great distances.
Black Turtle
The Black Turtle can be used defensively in battle. Its outer shell works more like a shield and can block attacks. The Black Turtle can allow Maria to cross bodies of water such as rivers or lakes.
White Tiger
The White Tiger is a familiar more suitable for close range combat. It can zip around quickly with sparks of lightning. White Tiger has an electric state which can be used to stun enemies and blow them away with an explosive force.

Goals: I thought that Maria might be an interesting fit for the game because she can summon beasts into the world. Is she any different than the monsters she summons? She'd feel concerned that she's losing her humanity. Maria hides the fact that she's a witch from people. What would happen if they found out? She might be accused of conjuring black magic. Maria will have to carefully navigate this struggle by finding people she can trust. It won't be easy for her. The roleplay offers a chance to interact with other characters. Forming strong bonds will be crucial to her development. I'm excited to see how she grows as a character.
